Fine Art Yearbook: Final Boards (for now)

Dependant on when on the yearbook comes back from Duffield, these are my final presentation boards for the brief in it's entirety.

If we receive the product back before hand in, I intend to update my impact board with final product photography of both the printed publication and its accompanying flyers.

In regards to producing a mock-up for photographing instead... that would just be a pointless exercise and a waste of time given the developmental work posted online thus far.

I could perhaps include an extra board at the end detailing the specification for the printed flyers and their design layouts.

Fine Art Yearbook: Image Update

This afternoon Steff Barratt got in touch to inform me that they had found new images for Alex Norcop on a separate student's hard-drive. (Alex's original image was only supplied due to the fact that his own hard-drive had been stolen, and therefore all of his images lost).

Whilst this creates a little additional work for us, the images will definitely contribute to the overall aesthetic of the book and therefore we are willing to update his spread for the benefit of ourselves, the course and of naturally, Alex.

Fine Art Yearbook: Proposed Final Cover

Finak Outside:

Final outside cover is designed with a view to create a repeat pattern once multiple books are laid out next to each other. Furthermore the design ties into the concept of 'what we cannot say' through interfering with the communication of the phrase, as well as creating ambiguity in relation to whether you holding the front or back cover (you can only tell by looking inside or looking at the spine).

Final Inside:

Final inside cover is designed in order to contrast with the outside and to smooth the transition from a cover that doesn't use a typeface featured within the content.

All reverse out text is also in 8pt as opposed to 7.5pt. This was done in order to ensure the ink didn't bleed out the communication.

Fine Art Yearbook: Cover Development 03

Whilst Ed, Vickie and I were making corrections to the inside of the yearbook this afternoon, Tim's focus was on finalising the cover (both inside and outside) in preparation for a final pre-print proof.

The main feature that I hadn't thought of myself, was the idea to print the inside covers reversed out... therefore white text on black.

Thanks to Tim's creative brain, we now have covers that unify the book as a solid unit; as opposed to before where I felt the outside cover was slightly off kilter in regards to what the design direction of the feature content was like.

To culminate, very impressed with how the publication is coming together at these final stages. (See next post for final versions of both inside and outside covers).

Fine Art Yearbook: Layout Development 05

After a weekend full of End of Year Show promotion, today was again judgment day in terms of ploughing through the updates required as per our last meeting with the Fine Art Committee.

To be concise, amendments as follows:

01. Introduction text finally set
02. All feature spreads swapped out as requested
03. Lucy Fudge image rotated (student request)
04. Small image removed on Jane Kenington spread
05. Michael Ormerod spread amended with new image
06. Bobby West spread amended with new images
07. Touring info text finally set

Still to do:

01. Finalise page numbering system
02. Finalise covers

-

The team and I are definitely on the home straight now! All of today's modifications went to plan and have only contributed to making the book more successful than it already was... very few weak looking spreads on the whole in terms of content.

I would still like a new image from Nicolas Tighe as before, but it has been discussed that this image reflects his work as he is all about producing digital video sequences. Rough with the smooth I guess.

I also personally feel that Lucy Fudge's spread looked more coherent prior to this change, but the student has been very assertive in voicing their opinion and we have to honour that.

Fine Art Yearbook: Studio Spread Photography (Replacement Images)

As promised by the committee, the below images are to be the new feature spread replacements alongside the black and white image from Michael Ormerod's spread.

Nothing much to say other than the conversion from RGB to greyscale worked exactly the same as before (Ed lending a helping hand this time, especially in regards to Photoshopping out the water bottle on the last image - clever chap!)

Selected (& then treated) replacements:

Overall, very pleased with the quality of these images. I think they'll make a fine addition to the pace and diversity of the book once integrated into the design.

*Edit: Should also mention that below is the new image supplied by Michael Ormerod given that his original has now been transferred to a feature spread:

Fine Art Yearbook: Image Update

Quick note just to outline the arrival of Bobby West's new images... finally.

Bobby has received a slightly lenient deadline from the team and I, but as such we have desparately wanted to improve the visual aesthetic of his spread both for the benefit of ourselves and the student!! (Why you would not want to maximise the impact of your work in an end of degree yearbook is beyond me?!)

Non-the-less, here we are. Much improved images and new developed spread to follow shortly!

Fine Art Yearbook: Client Meeting 05

This morning's meeting with the Fine Art Committee went extremely well; the physical and online mock-ups proving particularly useful as expected. Slightly disappointed with some of the changes that we have been requested to make, but such is life in the world of client led design. (I can't really moan, the committee have been excellent in comparison to some).

To clarify in a concise manner, the meeting resolved as follows:

General

01. Need to remove new small image on Jane Kenington's spread, it looked better how it was before (this has been expressed by the student herself).

02. Some of the feature spreads aren't as strong as we would like in terms of the image content. Please can you swap out the pages after Jimmy Cave, Jane Kenington, Isabel Skinner and Bobby West. New images will be supplied to you later on today, and we would also like to use the black and white image from Michael Ormerod's spread on one of the feature spreads.

-

Generally, I'm not in disagreeance with committee here; although I am marginally annoyed (as mentioned) that we need to interfere with Michael Ormerod's student spread for the sake of a feature spread. In my opinion, a student showcase is far more important... but I guess this gives Michael the opportunity to have more work featured and it does boil back down to this notion of 'what's best for the book/course, not what's best for the student'.

Other than, the team and I shall await new images and introduction/touring info content as repeatedly requested.

Happy days.

Fine Art Yearbook: Layout Development 04

Following today's crit and the supply of new student images, Tim and I spent the best part of this evening making final revisions to the yearbook in preparation for tomorrow's meeting with the committee.

What we wanted to achieve by this was to be a stage where we were happy with the layout for every single student and the only amendments to come would be those that we have been unable to avoid; primarily due to the fact that we are yet to receive the final copy (introduction, touring info etc).

Having worked well into the night, the below issuu document illustrates a 95% complete document with a number of student spreads having been reworked in order to showcase the artwork in the best possible light.

In addition to the students that were updated with new images, an array of spreads were modified so again I shall list them below (in chronological order) to clarify:

01. Geri Callan's spread revised to be less image heavy and easier on the eye

02. Ian Chapman updated with new images, much better!

03. Alex Cunningham's left hand page image moved in to create balance

04. Lisa Derbyshire updated with new images, again much better

05. Katie Dent's spread is now less chaotic

06. Becky Johnson's spread revised for clarity, balance and aesthetics

07. Liam Kelly's spread is now less static and consistent with the book

08. Jane Kenington updated with a new image, although Tim and I suspect this might revert back to how it was before

09. Amy McKeating similarly updated with new images. Although this didn't particularly need it, the spread is actually looking a lot better. Probably my favourite...

10. Simon Phillips' spread is now less image heavy

11. Jonny Rawlin updated with new silhouette images, also much better

12. Isabel Skinner updated with new image, finally the spread works!

13. Naomi Wallis has had the grey space around her left-hand image reduced so the work stands out more and doesn't get lost to the layout

-

Excluding Bobby West (new images due today or tomorrow latest), I think the pace and dynamic of the publication is shaping up nicely and we are almost at a point where we can start producing final pre-print proofs.

In conjunction with the paper-based mock up, the above issuu document will be available for Fine Art to browse through in tomorrow morning's meeting, which should more or less give them a clear idea of what the entire thing will feel like.

If I had to be picky, I would like a new image from Alex Norcop and Nicolas Tighe, but I am largely satisfied what we have managed to achieve up until this point.

Feedback due tomorrow subsequent to the meeting.

Fine Art Yearbook: Image Updates

As dictated by our 24hr request deadline, below are a selection of the revised images received from the students on Fine Art whose spreads needed that little something extra.

Ian Chapman

Lisa Darbyshire

Jane Kenington

Amy McKeating

Jonny Rawlin

Isabel Skinner

Again we have received images from a couple of students that we did not request images from, ie. Jane Kenington and Amy McKeating, but according to the Fine Art Committee these are both two hard working individuals who want to achieve the best they possibly can do... and I feel that I have to respect that.

As a general overview, the images received are all of a heightened quality, which is promising. I'm just not entirely sure if we will make use of Jane's images as her spread is working perfectly okay.

In fact, the same could be said for Amy McKeating, but those images just look so damn good... we may have to have a little re-jig to get them in.

Haaving been slightly irritated by receiving yet more images from students that we did not intend (and therefore generating more work for ourselves), I'm hopeful that this is the last batch that we will need - minus Bobby West who has promised new images by tomorrow - and that we can now plough on with shaping this up ready for print.

Fine Art Yearbook: Complete Mock Version 01

Having arrived a stage where we feel as if we have a 95% completed publication, the logical next step with the yearbook this afternoon was to produce a fully functional black and white mock up for both our meeting with the committee on Friday (6th May, 11am) and the progress crits tomorrow.

To accompany this, we also made the choice to pop down to the digital dungeon in order to print a selection of full colour and full scale sample spreads for proofing. This was due to the fact that a full colour mock up would have cost £43 even on a laser jet printer, and our mock up (due to the annoyingly A4 square format) is printed at 97% scale to fit spreads onto a sheet of A3 with crop marks.

This aside, the purpose of the entire exercise was mainly to gain a sense of pacing throughout the book not just on flat spreads, but through the way you interact with the product physically. Furthermore, we were also able to tell if we had given ourselves enough room in the spine for images not to get lost - although 14mm should be enough any day of the week.

With a cover also printed downstairs on the heavyweight 325gsm matte, the group and I are both pleased with the way it came out and are confident that the Fine Art Committee will find it beneficial to look through in conjunction with an online issuu document to flick through as well.

Fine Art Yearbook: Layout Development 03

With new images for Alex Nightingale, Jessie Simmonds and the feature spreads, the rest of this morning and early afternoon was spent developing the necessary alterations for the Fine Art Yearbook.

As a collaborative effort with 100% attendance, we ploughed through what was needed to be done in a relatively short amount of time. I have to say it was quite cosey in the mac suite for a change.

Other than the obvious, there are a decent handful of changes to note so I will list them below (in chronological order):

01. Feature shot alongside introduction added

02. Surplus image removed from Stephanie Barratt's spread

03. Geri Callan spread re-designed to showcase work with more clarity

04. Jimmy Cave's spread simplified to better suit the flow of the book

05. Alex Cunningham's spread altered for the same reason

06. Ahmed El Haddad's spread altered to be more dynamic

07. Slight tweak on Chikae Howland's spread, bottom left (aesthetic choice)

08. Becky Johnson's spread re-designed to be more dynamic

09. Liam Kelly's spread re-designed for greater clarity

10. Alex Nightingale's new images added

11. Isabel Skinner's spread re-worked, yet needs improvement still

12. Jessie Simmonds' new images added

-

Having made these amendments the group and I feel that we are almost there with the design of the entire book. A few more spreads need tweaking and we are yet to receive the touring info and course introduction, but there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel.

To clarify, from here we need to:

01. Layout final introduction text once received
02. Clarify final page numbering and apply
03. Amend the spreads of the following students for the listed reasons detailed below:

Geri Callan

Widow within personal statement, no matter how many columns we span the paragraph.

Ian Chapman

Image still of a sub-standard quality. As far as we are aware new images are on their way within 24hrs. This deadline is strict.

Lisa Derbyshire

In our eyes, the spread still isn't working from a design point of view and in conjunction with the desire of the student, we have allowed for new images of work to be supplied within 24hrs.

Simon Phillips

Layout is a bit image heavy and a bit manic, but images are top quality. I'm sure the team and I will crack it on our next attempt.

Jonny Rawlin

Yet to supply silouette scans, although these are similarly due within the next 24hrs or they won't be going into the catalogue.

Isbel Skinner

Spread still isn't working, although Isabel has clarified that the image originally to be 'full bleed' is in fact not the right one. The spread in its current state displays the correct full bleed image, however Isabel has also expressed the desire to supply one more new image partly due our request.

Bobby West

We are really pushing to acquire a new image from Bobby, although getting hold of him is proving to be quite difficult. Although not entirely fair, we may stretch slightly beyond our 24hr deadline in order for new images to be provided for the good of the yearbook as a whole... smaller images just look wrong.

04. Layout page for touring info and End of Year Show times
05. Layout credits and colophon for inside covers

Fine Art Yearbook: Studio Spread Photography

As outlined in our meeting prior to the Easter break (Tues 29th March), these are the supplied images for the argeed 'feature spreads' that will occur between every 5 or 6 students depending on the flow of the publication.

...I'm not exaggerating when I say there are quite a few to choose from:

In addition to the CMYK conversion, I took the role of converting all of the images into greyscale having gone through a thorough selection process with Ed, Vickie and Tim.

This decision was reached as the group and I felt that greyscale would contrast nicely against the colour spreads of the student work and make it crystal clear that these spreads were not part of the graduating showcase... essentially the black and white acted a visual queue for the audience.

Overall, I would suggest that there are probably one or two images that could be swapped out for improved compositions as a final alteration. But for now, these are more than perfect for the job they need to do.

(I'd love to be able to have the 'build and demolish, appear and disappear' image on the cover. If only we weren't under strict instruction to have a text only cover...)
