Having arrived a stage where we feel as if we have a 95% completed publication, the logical next step with the yearbook this afternoon was to produce a fully functional black and white mock up for both our meeting with the committee on Friday (6th May, 11am) and the progress crits tomorrow.
To accompany this, we also made the choice to pop down to the digital dungeon in order to print a selection of full colour and full scale sample spreads for proofing. This was due to the fact that a full colour mock up would have cost £43 even on a laser jet printer, and our mock up (due to the annoyingly A4 square format) is printed at 97% scale to fit spreads onto a sheet of A3 with crop marks.
This aside, the purpose of the entire exercise was mainly to gain a sense of pacing throughout the book not just on flat spreads, but through the way you interact with the product physically. Furthermore, we were also able to tell if we had given ourselves enough room in the spine for images not to get lost - although 14mm should be enough any day of the week.
With a cover also printed downstairs on the heavyweight 325gsm matte, the group and I are both pleased with the way it came out and are confident that the Fine Art Committee will find it beneficial to look through in conjunction with an online issuu document to flick through as well.
